Hydrotherapy FAQs
What is hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is a specialised for of rehabilitation performed in our purpose-built heated hydrotherapy pool in Warilla. The warmth and buoyancy of the water reduce pressure on joints, muscles and the spine, making it easier to move with less pain and discomfort. Hydrotherapy is commonly used to assist people with arthritis, back pain, sports injuries, neurological conditions, chronic pain and post-operative rehabilitation, including knee and hip replacements. At Illawarra Rehabilitation Clinic, our physiotherapists and exercise physiologists create personalised hydrotherapy programs to improve strength, balance, mobility and overall function for patients throughout Warilla, Shellharbour, Wollongong and the Illawarra.
Do I need to know how to swim?
No. You do not need to be able to swim to participate in hydrotherapy at Illawarra Rehabilitation Clinic. Our heated hydrotherapy pool in Warilla is designed specifically for rehabilitation rather than swimming, and many of our patients have little or no swimming experience. We can provide flotation and buoyancy devices to help you feel safe and supported in the water, while our physiotherapists and exercise physiologists guide you throughout your session. Hydrotherapy can be suitable for people recovering from injury, surgery, arthritis, chronic pain and neurological conditions, regardless of their swimming ability or fitness level.
Is the Hydrotherapy Pool Accessible for Wheelchair Users?
Yes. Illawarra Rehabilitation Clinic offers accessible hydrotherapy in Warilla for people with mobility limitations, disabilities and complex rehabilitation needs. Our purpose-built hydrotherapy pool is fully wheelchair accessible and features a state-of-the-art ceiling hoist, allowing safe and comfortable transfers into and out of the water. We also have an in-clinic commode available to assist clients requiring additional support. Our experienced physiotherapists and exercise physiologists regularly work with patients recovering from stroke, neurological conditions, spinal injuries, arthritis, joint replacements and physical disabilities, including NDIS participants. We proudly provide accessible hydrotherapy services to patients throughout Warilla, Shellharbour, Wollongong and the Illawarra, with every program tailored to the individual’s needs, goals and level of mobility.
What Should I Bring to My Session?
Please bring swimwear and a towel to your hydrotherapy session at Illawarra Rehabilitation Clinic. You may also wish to bring a change of clothes and thongs or pool shoes for moving around our heated hydrotherapy pool in Warilla. If you use mobility aids such as a walking stick, walker or wheelchair, please bring these along so our team can assist with safe access to the pool. Our hydrotherapy programs are designed for people recovering from injury, surgery, arthritis, chronic pain and neurological conditions, and our physiotherapists and exercise physiologists will ensure you are comfortable, supported and prepared for your session.
How Is Hydrotherapy Different from Water Aerobics?
While both take place in a heated pool, hydrotherapy is a personalised rehabilitation program prescribed and supervised by qualified physiotherapists and exercise physiologists, whereas water aerobics is typically a group fitness class focused on general exercise and cardiovascular fitness. Hydrotherapy is designed to assist people recovering from injury, surgery, arthritis, chronic pain, neurological conditions and workplace injuries, with exercises tailored to individual goals, abilities and medical conditions. At Illawarra Rehabilitation Clinic, our hydrotherapy programs in Warilla are evidence-based and specifically structured to improve strength, mobility, balance and function while supporting a safe and effective recovery.
Who Can Benefit from Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy can benefit people of all ages and abilities who are recovering from injury, managing a chronic condition or looking for a low-impact form of exercise. At Illawarra Rehabilitation Clinic, our hydrotherapy programs in Warilla are commonly used to assist people with arthritis, back pain, neck pain, sports injuries, workplace injuries, neurological conditions, chronic pain, balance problems and post-operative rehabilitation, including knee and hip replacements. The warmth and buoyancy of the water help reduce pressure on the joints, making movement more comfortable while improving strength, mobility, balance and overall function. We provide personalised hydrotherapy programs for patients throughout Warilla, Shellharbour, Wollongong and the Illawarra, with each program tailored to individual needs and goals.
