About Hydrotherapy

At Illawarra Rehabilitation Clinic, we provide professional hydrotherapy in a purpose-built heated indoor pool designed to support rehabilitation, recovery and long-term health. The unique properties of water reduce stress on the joints, muscles and spine, allowing people to exercise more comfortably while improving strength, mobility, balance and confidence.

Hydrotherapy can be highly effective for people recovering from surgery or injury, managing chronic pain, living with arthritis or neurological conditions, or returning to activity following a workplace or sporting injury. The warmth and buoyancy of the water allow movements that may be difficult or painful on land, making rehabilitation more achievable and often more enjoyable.

Our experienced therapists develop individualised hydrotherapy programs tailored to each person’s condition, goals and abilities. Whether your aim is to reduce pain, improve mobility, build strength or regain independence, we provide a safe and supportive environment to help you progress at your own pace.

What sets Illawarra Rehabilitation Clinic apart is our combination of a purpose-built hydrotherapy pool, rehabilitation gym, multidisciplinary team and state-of-the-art ceiling hoist system. This allows us to provide accessible hydrotherapy for people of all abilities, including those who may not be able to safely access traditional aquatic facilities.

By combining evidence-based hydrotherapy with comprehensive rehabilitation, we help patients move better, feel stronger and return to the activities that matter most to them.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Hydrotherapy FAQs

What is hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is a form of exercise and rehabilitation performed in a heated pool under the guidance of trained therapists. The warmth and buoyancy of the water help reduce pressure on the joints, muscles and spine, making movement more comfortable and often less painful than exercising on land.

Hydrotherapy can be beneficial for people recovering from injury or surgery, managing chronic pain, improving mobility, building strength, or returning to everyday activities. Programs are individually tailored to your needs and can help improve flexibility, balance, fitness, confidence and overall function.

At Illawarra Rehabilitation Clinic, hydrotherapy is often used as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program and may be combined with physiotherapy, exercise physiology and gym-based rehabilitation to achieve the best possible outcomes.

What can hydrotherapy help with?

Hydrotherapy can assist with back pain, neck pain, arthritis, joint replacements, sports injuries, workplace injuries, neurological conditions, chronic pain, and post-operative rehabilitation. Our heated hydrotherapy pool in Warilla allows patients to exercise with less pressure on their joints while improving strength, balance, flexibility, and confidence. Hydrotherapy is commonly used alongside physiotherapy and exercise physiology to support long-term rehabilitation outcomes across the Illawarra.

Who may benefit from hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy can benefit people of all ages and abilities, particularly those who experience pain, stiffness, weakness or difficulty exercising on land. The supportive properties of water reduce the impact on joints and muscles, allowing movement to be performed more comfortably and with greater confidence.

Hydrotherapy may be suitable for people with:

Arthritis and joint pain
Back and neck pain
Sports injuries
Workplace injuries
Knee, hip and shoulder injuries
Joint replacement rehabilitation
Neurological conditions
Stroke recovery
Balance and mobility difficulties
Chronic pain conditions
Physical disabilities
Post-surgical rehabilitation

Hydrotherapy is also an excellent option for people who find traditional exercise difficult due to pain, reduced mobility or limited weight-bearing capacity. Our therapists tailor each program to your individual needs, goals and level of function to ensure a safe and effective rehabilitation experience.

What do I have to do before swimming?

Before entering the pool, all patients are required to shower using the facilities provided within our centre. Showering before swimming helps maintain water quality and ensures a clean, safe environment for everyone using the hydrotherapy pool.

To help keep the pool area clean and hygienic, shoes must be removed before entering the pool room. We recommend bringing appropriate swimwear, a towel and any personal items you may need for your session.

If you require assistance accessing the pool, our team will guide you through the process and provide support as needed, including one-on-one assistance for patients using our state-of-the-art ceiling hoist system. Our goal is to make your hydrotherapy experience safe, comfortable and enjoyable from the moment you arrive.
